volvo 280 outdrive lift issue

Postby rjb021080 » Sat May 19, 2018 6:10 am

All,

wonder if anyone has any experience of a 280 leg going down ok, but won't come back up unless i apply a little bit of help by hand?

i was wondering if it was the motor not having enough amps as the motor is extremely noising or the brass gear?

anyone else had this issue before?

thanks

My old 270 used to do that. Simply had to tighten the clutch slightly on the lifting motor to solve it.
I've no idea if the 280 is the same though, I thought it used rams but I'm probably wrong.

Really sorry, I just cannot remember. I know it was simple, and easy to get to so it can only have been on the lift mechanism itself.
Just had a quick google to refresh my memory and can't find anything about a lift clutch, they all seem to have a cut-out switch to stop the motor when the drive is fully raised.
Mine didn't have any electrical cut-outs (or they didn't work) so was reliant on the slippage when raised but maybe it had been modified at some point.

Reading your post again, I'd be tempted to investigate the noise from the motor. Mine was a loud whine, but not excessively noisy considering the weight it was lifting.

The lift is achieved by a small electric motor inside the boat held on by 2 small bolts. Check that these are tight.
Motor shaft has a square shaft that engages with the lift worm drive. It is usually quite noisy. Check that the leg is earthed well. This is usually a bond between the outdrive and the engine block. The micro switch in the top of the leg inside the boat senses the status of the leg and switches on/off the dashboard warning lamp.
The leg is very heavy so you need some decent current to do the job - and a good earth. The micro switch is quite expensive , if volvo dont have them then keyparts watford do. The micro switch spends most of its life being abused in the shut position crushing its internal spring.
I know of no clutch, sorry.

Ok. Today I received my Volvo 280 repair manual I won on eBay. I now know where the clutch is!!! At the bottom of the shaft where the electrical box resides is a nut. The distance between the housing and the shaft is critical as tightening applies pressure to the spring and makes the leg lift stop slipping when half way up. Like wise loosening the nut will stop the motor and leg from labouring.

If you need any information at all the book and manual I have is pretty handy!! Give me a message. Image

Well done, really glad you found it!
Sorry I couldn't have been of more assistance, I just could not remember how it was done other than turning a nut and it being an easy job.
