Hi Dusty,

I've got one. Obviously you need to get a mechanic to check the engines (on a seatrial) and a surveyor to check the hull. Engine issues will be your biggest potential issues, e.g.

1) Valve timing (should have been done every 200 hours / 2 years
2) Outdrive bellows (also every 2 years)
3) Injector testing
4) Turbos
5) Oil coolers
6) Superchargers

Other things worth considering...

1) Do all the switches / nav gear work?
2) Are fire extinguishers in date (£1000 to replace)
3) Are the green / grey perspex fittings (e.g. companionway door) all in good condition?
4) Are the sea cocks in good condition (£1000 to replace)
5) Does the boat have A/C, heating, holding tank (all desirable)
6) Are the covers in good nick (£2000+ to replace)?
7) Is the cockpit seating in good nick (£2000+ to replace)?

Also ensure that the seller has the original VAT invoice, the builders certificate and a good wad of bills showing that it's been looked after.

Hi Pete,

Many thanks for reply. Viewing the boat on Wednesday in Italy as we intend you use the Targa in Mediterranean.
I'm in process of arranging Surveyor if boat is as described.
I'm told boat is well maintained, your points are good thanks.
Would you fly out British Surveyor ?
Can you recommend insurer.
Cheers Rusty.

You could ask for surveyor recommendations on the ybw.com forum.

I use 'Y' Yacht Insurance who have the fairest policies in terms of exclusions, etc.

Let me know how you get on.

Rusty,

I bought a 2003 Targa 34 with KAD44's in March. I presume yours will have the KAD300's. My advice would be to have the engines surveyed as well as the boat itself.

Whatever you do, make sure you check behind the engines for corrosion. This is a common fault and is caused by water leaking in through the lift raft locker at the stern. It's not easy to get in there...

I've had the following done to get mine up to a decent baseline. Most of it was preventative rather than repairs:

1. Full service including valve clearances
2. Replacement of oil water coolers on both engines
3. Signal injectors on both engines
4. Outdrive rebuilds on both drives
5. New bellows
6. New batteries
7. Nav upgrade (Axiom 9 fits perfectly)
8. New steering wheel
9. New toilet pump and pipes

As Pete says, a thick wad of service history is a must, and the valve clearances definitely need doing every 200 hours.

Get a good one, and you'll love it. Great boats, exhilarating, (even with 44's, mine still achieves 38/39 knots) and handles very well. Also good on fuel, at cruising speeds! :-)

Cheers

Hi Shaun,

Can you send me a photo of the Axium 9 installed (admin@fairlineonwersclub.com)?

Interesting advice regards the corrosion at the back. I wasn't aware of that issue but will check mine (not that there's a lot that can be done other than hoik the engine out)!
