Targa 38 Stern Drives, angle of toe in ?

Postby Le08run » Sun Feb 04, 2018 7:31 pm

Hi
We Have a T38, can anyone tell me how much the stern drives should toe in ?
Also having problems with trimming the drives. The starboard drive lifts intermittently when raised in time with the Port. Sounds like the hyd Motor cutting in and out. However when raised on its own there’s no problem.
Cheers

When you say, 'toe in', do you mean the trim? My T34 runs best with the drive trimmed right in ('-4' I think).

Regarding the erratic raising of the drives, have you tried some contact cleaner on the terminals of the relays mounted at at the back of the engine bay? They look like this...

I keep 4 non OEM spares on board (two for each side).

Hi
Sorry, it’s like the tracking on your car wheels. There is a tie rod between the two dph drives. Do the drives have to be set dead parallel with each other or set to slightly aim at each other.
I will have a look for the relays and try that.
Also would you say the props are matching pairs ?

Starboard front L2 3587395 G6F
Rear G4 3587397 G6F

Port front F4 3587395 G6F
Rear G4 3587397 G6F
Trying to find out if they suitable for use here in uk or the med.

Cheers

I can't answer your toe in / out question.

The props however are two pairs (G6's) and I'm not aware of any reason why they wouldn't be suitable for the UK or the Med. If you have the original builders certificate it will confirm the prop size fitted as standard. Props may have been replaced over the years for various reasons.

Hi
Stewart at Southwest Marine ( may I recommend him ) has today advised they should have approx 2.5cm of toe in. Thought the props were a pair and original paperwork does show G6s just confused by the F4 & L2 no’s. Have been told fitting G5s may help us increase our rpm which at present will max out at approx 3200rpm 29-30 knots. Hoping for more from D6 310s.
Thanks for your help

I would investigate everything else before changing the props as there's more often than not an underlying cause.

Make sure the bottom of the boat is free of fouling, the props are in good condition, the turbos are good, fuel is clean, throttle is correctly adjusted, etc.
